What is Sewing Seeds?
Sewing Seeds provides accessible, accurate, + inspired information on natural dyes to our community.
Why Natural Dyes? Prior to the development of synthetic dyes in 1856, color had been extracted from numerous plants, animals, and minerals for thousands of years. Today, few people are aware of the many sources of beautiful dyes nor the multitude of colors that can be achieved.
Sewing Seeds’ goal is to narrow the gap between the desire for and access to knowledge and materials regarding natural dyes. Read More

Dye Plant CSA
Sewing Seeds is currently preparing its new project - a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) fully dedicated to natural dyes! Starting this summer in Brooklyn, an abandoned lot on the corner of Bergen and 4th Street will be transformed as part of the 596 Acres project. The Sewing Seeds CSA garden will run as a 6 month season between June and November 2012, providing members with plants to be used as natural dyes, as well as recipes and workshops utilizing them.
The Sewing Seeds CSA will create a new green space in the Gowanus community, as well as strongly interact with Textile Arts Center education programs. Building on our experience growing The Living Library, we will focus on an expanded selection of annual dye plants yielding a variety of pigments. Sewing Seeds will provide information on the plants, dye extraction, and dye technique, serving as a backdrop for free workshops and lectures for the community.
Member information coming soon!
