January 8 - 29

We’re sure you learned tie-dye in school but you’d probably be surprise if you knew that the beautiful Shibori textiles share some resist dye techniques with your hippie t-shirt. Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist-dye technique, that involves creasing, folding, dyeing, binding and knotting, to create beautiful and well defined patterns. In this 4 week class, students will learn the basics of Shibori using one of the most important dyes in Japan (and in the world), Indigo.

Natural Dyeing - FULL

Saturdays, 2:30-5PM
February 5 - 26

Dyeing can be a great way to bring back to life a stained dressed or to give a twist to all that white yarn hanging out at home. Even better if we only use natural dyes!

In 4 sessions you will learn the principles of dyeing fabric and yarn with beautiful colors using only natural dyes. Questions like “what is a dye”, “where can I find dyes in Nature”, “what is a mordant” will be addressed and a brief overview of the history of dyeing and techniques will be given. Each student will experiment dyeing different fibers using the most famous natural dyes, such as madder, weld, cochineal and the mysterious indigo. Students will also learn how to obtain different shades of color from the same dye.

Everyone will be encouraged to experiment with some resist dyeing techniques, such as tie-dye or shibori. Students are also welcome to bring additional materials they’d like to experiment with!

Price: $150, +$50 materials fee -- will include Indigo

Fiber Reactive Dyes (aka Procion Dyes)

Saturdays, 2:30-5PM
March 5 - 26

Procion dyes were discovered in the 50s in England and are still amongst the more eco-friendly of all the synthetic dyes. Plus they also have the best light- and wash-fastness. They can be used with all the cellulose based fibers: cotton, linen, rayon, but also with protein fibers:  wool or silk. What could be more versatile than that?

In this 4 week class, students will learn the basic procedures for dyeing with Procion dyes by immersion, painting and tie-dye, with both cellulose and protein fibers. It will be fun, and colorful and bright!

Price: $150 for 4-week course, +$25 materials fee
