Who is the Textile Arts Center?
Staff biosThe Textile Arts Center is the sum of it's community members -- students, teachers, professionals, artists, designers. The involvement of the public and all those with interest in Textiles is key to our success. There are many ways to get involved, and we'd love to have you join our community!
But there are several people at the heart of the Center. Click here for staff bios!
What is the Textile Arts Center?
The Center is situated on Carroll Street, between Brooklyn’s leafy Park Slope and the gallery-rich Gowanus neighborhoods. It occupies a newly renovated, 3,200sf space in an old sweater factory. Two giant arched windows designate the street-level gallery and workspace.
With its curved felt-covered walls, custom-designed light grid, and plenty of worktables, the Center is designed to serve the established and emerging creative community of Brooklyn. It features state-of-the-art weaving, screen-printing and dyeing equipment, including 30 multi-harness floor looms, a large vacuum-sealed exposure unit and two fabric-yardage screen-printing tables, plus much more.
As a show of commitment to the fiber arts community, the Textile Arts Center will soon be offering residency positions to outstanding artists in the field, as well as affordable private workspaces with late night access to our studios.

The Textile Arts Center provides artists, working professionals, students, and artisans with the tools for making and sharing fiber art in a gorgeous naturally lit 3,200sf workspace.
The weaving studio houses 29 multi-harness floor-looms and 16 table-looms, representing several brands, models, sizes, and weaving widths. The fiber library contains over 800 conveniently displayed and meticulously sorted, cones, balls, and skeins of wools, cottons, and synthetics in a full spectrum of hues. The studio is equipped with warping boards and mills, swifts, bobbin-winders, as well as threading and weaving tools.
The fully equipped Surface Design Lab supports advanced screen-printing and dyeing methods. A darkroom with a vacuum-sealing exposure unit is available for burning screens using light-sensitive emulsion. For fast and convenient rinsing and reclaiming of screens, the studio has a washout booth with a power-washer attached.
Two custom-made tables, one 2-yards-, and one 3-yards long, are padded and dedicated to printing fabric yardage. An additional 8 stations are available for paper and non-repeat fabric printing.
In addition to the above techniques, members and visitors can explore various textile processes through our many workshops taught by visiting artists, including embroidery, sewing, quilting, felting, and more.
GALLERY
Gallery Events
The gallery aims to offer a view into the not-always-soft-and-plushy world of fiber and dispel preconceptions that limit fiber art to craft. It showcases solo- and group shows, as well as student work. The Gallery is a backdrop for events, lectures and screenings on fiber and textile arts and their place in art history and the art world.
