About Awamaki Lab
Awamaki Lab is a four-month fashion residency that brings young designers to rural Peru to work side-by-side with members of Awamaki’s artisan cooperatives.
These designers create garments that are able to bridge the gap to an international consumer market, enabling women weavers, seamstresses, and knitters in the Sacred Valley to develop a sustainable income for themselves, their families and their communities.

Art in the Andes: Crafting w/ Awamaki Lab
Roll up your sleeves, pull on your sewing chullo, and join us for an evening of cross-cultural crafting!
The Awamaki Lab team invites you to transform traditional Andean textiles into modern, take-away gifts. You will learn firsthand how we work with indigenous artisan communities to reinvigorate an ancient weaving technique and encourage female entrepreneurship.
Under the guidance of AwaLab’s sewing instructor Tara Banerjee –the Williamsburg Seamster- and our Season 2 design team, participants will create up-cycled accessories from textile remnants, selecting and working from one of three patterns designed in partnership with members of our Peruvian sewing co-operative.
Projects will include, but are not limited to, colorful zipped key pouches, heart-shaped pin cushions, and various custom home goods. Sewers of all levels are welcome, as the workshop will replicate the vocational training received by our novice seamstresses in Ollantaytambo, Peru.
Where: Textile Arts Center, Manhattan,
26 W 8TH ST
NEW YORK, NY 10011
When: Thursday, January 26th, 6:30 - 9:30pm
